It's the 10th week of your first trimester. The week seems to pass by faster, and you are almost left with a few more weeks till you are on your second trimester. Last week on your week 9, your little bean has graduated from being an embryo to a fetus now. What changes await for you for this week? How much your little fetus is growing now? I am sure you are excited to find out. Well, let's find out! First Trimester: Week 10 Growth Progression Your baby’s internal organs are now fully formed and currently slowly maturing. It will continue to do so over the next several weeks. Their fingernail and toenails are more visible. At this stage, the size of your baby is about 31 – 42mm in length. Though he's barely the size of a kumquat— a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce. Your baby has now completed the most critical portion of the development. It is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in their body rapidly grow and mature. Your little bean's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs, including the kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver. It is now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac. It is in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy. If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes. No more webbing and peach-fuzz hair are beginning to grow on tender skin. Other Progression Other development includes your little bean limbs can be bend now. Their hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over their heart. The feet may be long enough to reach in front of their body. The outline of their spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from the spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with the developing brain and sits very high on the head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will gain double in size to nearly 3 inches. Body Changes Your body is adjusting the different pregnancy hormones to sustain your baby. Your uterus will grow to accommodate your growing baby. Before pregnancy, your uterus was about the size of a fist. After six weeks, it will slowly grow to the size of a grapefruit. Some women may notice that they have emotional ups and downs during pregnancy. During this week of your pregnancy, you will notice a dewy glow. It's all thanks to the hCG hormone which stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone. The placenta produces these hormones after implantation. hCG hormone is essential in early pregnancy. It can be detected in the body within the first week of pregnancy. hCG also ensures the corpus luteum, which is a temporary endocrine gland in a woman’s body after ovulation. Not to forget hCG also needs progesterone hormone to help it. What Should You Plan This Week? Plan to see your doctor discuss regarding the further antenatal test to could be done to screen for fetal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome. You should consider doing this if you are more than 35 years old or have a family history of fetal defects. First-trimester screening for Down syndrome includes having a scan of nuchal translucency and a blood test. This screening test is usually done from 11 – 14 weeks of your pregnancy. Besides, a chorionic villus sampling could also be done to screen for genetic abnormalities in your baby. Talk to your doctor about these tests. Discuss with your partner regarding the timing to announce your pregnancy to your close family members and friends. Tips For This Week Tips on how to deal with your emotions during pregnancy: Rest and sleep as much as possible Do things that make you happy (for example, shopping, watching movies or having a facial) Talk to your close friends about it Tell your partner and ask for his support. Appreciate and celebrate the good things that you have in your life. If you find it too much to deal with, talk to your doctor about it. Another thing you should be taking care of is your hygiene. Make sure to wash your hands frequently to avoid catching flu. Go for natural remedies when you experience indigestion. Go out on maternity shopping- it should be the right time to do so! Don't forget to review your company maternity leave policy if you are a career woman.
