Actress, Model, Baker & Supermum Mimie Amirah Presents Chocolate Chip Cookies for Ramadan, Raya

“I have to rush off for shooting now,” said Mimie Amirah when contacted. It was time to shoot her scene in Kiblat Yang Hilang, an Astro Awesome TV Channel 123/MYTV Channel 122 drama series that is airing now for Ramadan.

“We will talk when I come back later,” she promised, and she kept her promise while rushing to get dinner ready that evening. This high-flying lady is so busy!

Mimie Amirah (or Amirah Abd Hamid her real name), used to be an air stewardess for Firefly but after nine years with the airline, decided to switch careers for more on-ground time with her family, especially since becoming a mum to her now 5-year old daughter, Eva Alayna Binti Mohd Fauzee.

Mimie Amirah when she was with Firefly before she left in 2019 and when she won the Orange Crush award of the airline for being the most likeable and courteous cabin crew.

“I moved from being a cabin crew in 2019 because I wanted to do something else and also, I wanted to spend more time with my daughter,” she said; mentioning that it took one year to conceive her. “We were so busy with our careers,” she added.

This is because her husband, too, is in the aviation industry. He is a captain for Malindo Boeing 737-800.

“Before COVID, he used to fly a maximum of six days a week and he always had night stops on the India and China routes, too. Now, of course, flying time has wound down a little but still, the flying life is a busy one.”

A Rising Star

Mimie Amirah today is a rising star for TV dramas and telemovies aired over TV3 and Astro’s Awesome TV.

“I was so lucky,” she said about getting roles for acting and photoshoots for ads. Apart from acting, Mimie Amirah is also quite a sought-after commercial talent and has done many commercials for many brands to date.

It was a good decision to sign up with talent agencies after her flying stint because she got quickly spotted. Getting roles has not stopped since.

Some of her most memorable roles on TV were in Beri Sedikit Waktu, Takdir Yang Tertulis, Perang Periuk Cooking Show, and a not-to-be-revealed-just-yet feature-length telemovie, which will be aired on the small screen this Raya.

Perang Periuk Cooking Show

One of her most memorable shows was when she did the Perang Periuk Cooking Show, which aired on Astro Naura Share in February this year.

It is a cooking competition show of three rounds, where she had to compete with her mum while being judged by celebrity chefs Ili Sulaiman, Sherson Lian, and her husband.

She explained about what she had to do in the show.

“First, my mother and I had to cook our best dish. Second, we had to challenge each other to cook something we did not know how to cook and third, we had to cook the same dish but my husband had to guess which was the one I cooked!”

For the second challenge, her mum challenged her to cook fish curry while she challenged her mum to cook Spaghetti Bolognaise.

“It was so hard,” she laughed as she recalled what happened. “I am not someone who loves cooking kampung food. For me, it was very difficult to balance the coconut milk and the curry powder, so it was very hard for me to cook that meal!”

But, despite all the culinary wits she had to put to the test, in the end – she won!

As for cooking and baking outside of TV, actually, Mimie Amirah is quite a pro having started a home-baking business eight years ago. Like all home businesses, it began on a trial basis.

“I started with cookies for Raya and surprisingly, it went well. So, I took up a few classes on cake making to expand my knowledge. I bake on the side now but I am only a home-baker, so I limit my orders and I will not take on too much.”

Amazingly, she does everything by herself ─ meaning she bakes, goes for shoots, then comes back to take care of household chores and her daughter!  And she does not have a maid! She used to have one, she said, but now the maid has gone back to her hometown.

“Normally I will wake up at 4am to make sure the cake is freshly baked and ready for delivery by 7am. Before I go to sleep at night, I make sure the ingredients are ready. I also make sure all the house work is done and before I leave the house for work, I make sure the meals are cooked and my husband’s uniform is ready.”

“It is very hectic,” she admits. “That is why I only take orders when I do not have shoots. But baking is something I enjoy very much.”

It is also a way to spend some time with her daughter.

“I let my daughter help me with the baking. She will help put the finishing touches or put some ingredients inside the mixer. I cannot let her do too much or she might end up eating and tasting the cookies or cake!”

Recipe for Mimie Amirah’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

“Chocolate Chip Cookies,” she replied. “This recipe is one of my best sellers and it is my daughter’s favourite cookies, too!”

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Course Raya cookies
Cuisine Malay recipe

Ingredients

  • 250 g butter
  • 3/4 cups castor sugar
  • 3/4 cups brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp essence vanilla
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 300 g chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Beat butter & castor sugar & brown sugar until it has a soft peak.
  • Add egg 1 by 1.
  • Add vanilla essence.
  • Use spatula to add flour & chocolate chips.
  • Keep the batter in the refrigerator for a minimum of 3 hours before baking.
  • Use an ice cream scoop to scoop out the cookie dough 1 by 1 and leave gaps in between each cookie on the baking tray.
  • Bake it at 180°C and it is ready to be served!
