Have you ever been so sleepy to the point that you could immediately fall straight to sleep if your eyelids just fall shut? This usually happens in class and I’m sure we’ve all been there before. The torturous feeling of drowsiness and not being allowed to sleep can be so tormenting.
When this happens, it’s impossible to pay attention to what the teacher is saying. Are you worried that your child is too busy fighting sleep in class to actually listen to their teachers’ lessons too? Here are some tips to make sure your kids stay awake in school.
1. Starting early
There is no doubt that we all know the only way to have enough sleep is to go to bed early. But it’s easier said than done, going to sleep early can be tough for your children. Kids are bound to struggle if they have to go to sleep early too suddenly. To avoid that, you should make your children go to bed earlier before school starts. Give them time to adapt to the sleeping schedule before having to wake up early for school. For example, parents can make their children go to bed early a week or two before school officially starts.
2. Committing to a schedule
It’s very important to set a fixed time for your child to sleep during the weekdays to ensure a consistent sleeping schedule. For instance, your child needs to be in bed by 9.30pm every night and they will be punished if they’re not tucked in at that time. Once they are used to the same pattern, they will be able to fall asleep at that time without a problem.

3. Doing as much as possible before bed
It would be good to let your child get everything ready and prepared for school on the following day. That way, they can sleep better knowing everything has been settled and they’ll have plenty of rest from the comfort. If your child did not rest properly at night, they will most likely nod off in the class all the time.
4. Regulating morning schedules
Having to wake up early and get ready for school is one of the things children are most reluctant to do and that is completely understandable. And that is why maintaining a regular routine is important for them to get used to what they have to do every morning. There might be fewer complaints from them once they know what they’ve got to do the moment they’re up in the morning.
5. Having a solid breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and you should believe that. A simple breakfast with the proper nutrients is enough for you to have a great day. Food and nutrition will give your children energy and help them make it through the day without suffering from drifting to dreamland in class. It would be good to insist on a good breakfast every morning.
6. Keeping in touch with their teachers
You won’t know how your child is doing in class if you’re not talking to their teachers regularly. Having good relationships with their teachers will ensure you’re aware when your kids are appearing tired in class. Make your children follow a specific schedule and see if they’re doing well. If not, you’ll be able to make adjustments to it then move on. Doing this can help your kids stay awake throughout their school day.
